The Issue
Last week I spent few hours trying to resolve silly issue on my Microsoft Vista Home Premium. I was unable to browse my network places. What was even more frustrating – I couldn’t browse any of the boxes on the network, including my own machine. Every time when tried to access one of the visible Network Places, I was getting error similar to this one:
However, I was still able to:
- Ping the Network Place by its name and IP.
- Access web server hosted on this box using HTTP protocol.
- Browse Network Place using UNIX system
I also made sure following is correct:
- All machines are in the same WORKGROUP.
- File and printer sharing is ON.
- Network Discovery is ON.
- My Network Type is set as PRIVATE.
Proposed solutions
I read many posts on the internet and people suggested following:
- Disable TCP/IPv6 in Network Connection Properties window.
- Change configuration of NETBIOS to enable it over TCP/IP.
- Modify registry value HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa\restrictanonymous
- Disable Firewall/Windows Defender.
Unfortunately, none of the above resolved the issue. I was still unable to browse my network places.
Resolution
Then I decided to check properties of my network adapter once again, and suddenly I discovered following: "Client for Microsoft Networks" was missing from the list!
When I added it do the list and rebooted my machine everything worked just fine!
